Rx Tracking Law in Place

The LECOM School of Pharmacy recently published an article laying out the expected consequences of Florida’s new prescription drug tracking law. The law, effective September first, creates a database that all Florida pharmacies can tap into to identify doctors or patients who seem to be going beyond the norms in addictive pain medications.

Last year, one of the criticisms of Florida’s drug dispensing system was that patients could go to multiple doctors and receive prescriptions over and over for the same condition. This would allow someone with a legitimate injury or pain to load up on strong pain-killers. These extra drugs would then be sold into the illegal prescription drug supply chain. In fact, it was getting so bad that our state was supplying the needs of addicts in states as far away as Kentucky.

Now, pharmacies have to enter both doctor information and drug information (linked to a patient) into a shared data base. This also helps catch doctors who primarily write narcotic prescriptions, sometimes in excess amounts, to patients. So-called, “pill mills” are clinics that exist simply to write prescriptions for narcotics (typically Vicodin or Oxycontin) for patients with pretend symptoms. It’s a way an unethical physician can make a great deal of money with little risk. Well, this system makes it a bit more risky.

Critics argue that such tracking invades people’s right to privacy and the reason so many pain medications are dispensed in the state has more to do with an aging, infirm population than anything else. But because Florida physicians prescribe more than ten times the popularly abused drug oxycodone than every other state in the nation combined, it seems there must be a problem.

Now, at least, we can find out. The information will be held private, unless police get involved and a court orders release of information pursuant to law enforcement investigation.
