Real Patients Pay for Abusers Again

It's been in the news a lot in Florida, so-called "pill mills" that accept bogus prescriptions and dispense Oxycontin or other powerful narcotics. They keep getting busted and the amounts are staggering -- over a three month period, one operation is charged with handing out 760,800 doses.

Florida has gotten the reputation of supplying the prescription drug needs of addicts in many other states with better enforcement. It's pretty obvious we have a problem. There are bad pharmacies as well as doctors who cross the line and over-prescribe. When these two come in combination, the numbers get impossibly huge. But it doesn't come in a vacuum. Drug distributors know what's going on; patients and addicts know as well.

So what's the answer? Legislators are considering limiting the amount of strong narcotics pharmacies can purchase wholesale to curb the problem. Sounds reasonable until you realize that perfectly legitimate patients may not be able to get the medications they need. It's not just a matter of finding another pharmacy either. Some patients are "locked in" because of their insurance of mobility issues. Many have relationships they value with their "regular" pharmacist.

And what happens when the supply dried up in an area? Those who actually need the drugs suffer.

The solution is to prosecute those businesses who are acting beyond the pale. Drugs like Oxycontin are tracked, both at the wholesale and retail level by the DEA. This system was used in a two-year investigation to catch the pharmacy above and in another case where 250,000 doses went out the door in March at a Spring Hill pharmacy.

We have good rules now, we just need to use them. And when a licensed pharmacy or doctor gets busted publically, that makes it less likely a professional thinking about some fast cash will reconsider.
