"Im Gonna Have Me some Worms"

Some of us remember the goofy song we learned at camp, singing, “nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I’m gonna eat some worms.” The next lyrics get a little detailed for people with queasy stomachs. But in the case of the worms referred to in this article from November 2011, it’s friends who are introducing friends to booze-soaked gummi worms, and kids are making and eating them right under the noses of their parents and teachers.

It’s pretty simple to make them, apparently. All one has to do is spread a layer of gummy worms, or gummi bears (booze-y bears) in a pan and then pour in Vodka or some other alcoholic beverage. The candy absorbs the liquor after a day and then the kids put the candies into their ziplock bags and take them wherever they go.

Having been a middle school and high school student at one point in time, one can imagine that some kids will get a thrill just out of seeing if they can get away with eating these during school hours. Others will want to try them just to see what they are like. They are alcoholic and after eating them over the period of an hour or so, a police officer did test too drunk to drive.

Just imagine the impact on the reasoning areas of one’s brain, which are generally necessary to accomplishing one’s school work as well as inhibiting one’s behaviors. Kids can get silly enough without assistance. When one thinks about all of the time and effort and expense that goes into educating kids, it’s a sad lot of ingratitude when the kids do not take it seriously and strive to do their best.

It’s good for parents and teachers to be aware of what is going on, because a home that has trusted kids to stay out of the liquor cabinet might need to watch a little more carefully. Kids at home alone might get someone older to buy the liquor for them and then make these without their parents’ knowledge. It may come to the point where this type of candy has to be banned, unfortunately, just because those in authority will not know whether kids have the original or the boozed-up type.
